It’s time to explore some of the many queer poets who have shaped and often defined American Poetry. From Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson to Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Audre Lorde, Mary Oliver and beyond, America’s poetry can’t be separated from its queer roots.
We’ll gather together as explicitly queer writers to spend time engaging with the chosen poet: We’ll read/ listen to their work, as well as cultural responses to it (in the form of reviews, essays, and interviews). We’ll also have plenty of time for our own writing and sharing in response.
Please note: you don’t need to write poetry (or even think you like poetry!) to enjoy and participate in this circle. This circle will focus on Danez Smith, a Black, non-binary, HIV-positive poet. Their poems and collections have won many prizes, including a Pushcart Prize, and have been featured in publications like The New York Times and Best American Poetry. (You can learn more about their work at danezsmithpoet.com.)
CANCELLATION POLICY: Tuition is non-refundable but can be credited towards a future class if the student withdraws no later than 14 days prior to the beginning of class. No refunds for missed classes. All credits must be used within one (1) year of receipt.
