The Craft of Writing Classes

The Craft of Writing Classes

  • Date: 04-5-2027
  • Time: Varies
  • Price: Varies
  • Open to: All Genders 18+

The Craft of Writing classes provide participants the opportunity to further hone their writing voice through instructions and exercises on craft designed to strengthen the power of story within their work. Whether writing memoir, creative non-fiction, or fiction, participants will benefit from these focused classes. Poets also find our craft of writing classes instrumental in shaping their work. Both eight-week series are offered as a discount package or on a class-by-class basis. We offer two distinct series on an on-going basis: Fall - Building Blocks of Story: Eight weeks of intensive study into the art of creating a story. The principles presented in these workshops are applicable to Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. Throughout these classes, we examine various elements of story to help participants increase their knowledge and expertise in the basic construction of a written story. Each class is designed with hands-on exercises to help the writer sharpen an existing manuscript and in the creation of new material. Spring - Reading Like a Writer: Want to write the great American novel? First, one must investigate the great American writers and their approaches to craft. In these classes, we study aspects of writing through critical reading of short pieces related to individual topics to attain that depth in one's own writing. Participants implement new techniques in their own work and use the art of critique to examine published authors and the participant's own work. Each session includes fastwrites, instruction, a longer writing time to apply new principles, and short readarounds to test new techniques.
