This 70-page anthology, a culmination of our collaboration with Cincinnati Public School's Project Connect, offers nearly 50 poems and short stories written by 40 young women experiencing life without a stable home. From reflections specific to their homelessness experience, to thoughts and feelings common to just about any teenage girl, the writings offer a glimpse of the young women’s courage, honesty, strength, individuality, and sense of community in the face of overwhelming odds.

By Phebe Beiser and Maria Motch (WWFC writers)
"'Unvarnished' is one word for Phebe Beiser's and Maria Motch's account of their pilgrimage to Varanasi. The authors, a self-described 'wuss' and a longtime practioner of eastern spirituality, are generous narrators of 'what really happened' when they chose to travel 'well beyond courage and comfort.' The poems, journal entries and narratives in this book - and the evocative photos - are imbued with the beauty of authentic experience." – Mary Pierce Brosmer

By Maria Motch (WWFC writer)
From December 2006 through December 2007 Maria Motch committed to writing a page a day, and dedicated the journal to her biggest love, her granddaughter Isabella. We are witness to loving reflections and anxious worries as well as adventures to Italy, Mexico, Jamaica and New England. Through her painter's perspective and photographer's lens, Maria shares her struggles with multiple sclerosis. Blissful moments come from reading, writing, painting, Pilates, the beauty of nature and, of course, her family.

In this anthology, 30 young women from pre-teens through late-teens expressed their thoughts and feelings on what it means to discover their voices. The poems were collected during Young Women Writing for a Change classes held from 2000-2008. Referring to this book, one of the facilitators writes: "What you have in your hands is a collection of texts, but it is also a glimpse into this circle of remarkable young writers, who write, listen, create, and support one another in finding their voices." Cincinnati-based ArtsWave and the Ohio Arts Council supported the classes. Proceeds from the sale of this book will benefit the outreach programs of Women Writing for a Change.
