Through the magic of  WWfaC I have found a voice for the army of women who live inside my head:  the  lover, the injured child, the frustrated mother, the sage, the overworked  business woman, the philosopher, the sinner, and the saint.

Core Semester Classes and Programs

Core Semester Classes and Programs -

Writing is the way I process my life and the world.  Being part of this group insures that I will continue to write.  And sharing with the group helps me to know I’m not alone.   - Judy Cirillo

The core of Women Writing for (a) Change is the semester course for adult women. Offered twice a year (August to December and January to May) this semester course invites writers to make a commitment to themselves and their writing. Participants invest their time (two and a half hours once a week for 15 weeks) and their money to create a community which will hold and evoke their words. In addition, we also offer a seven-week summer semester. In 2005, one course was established to welcome women and men together, and in 2006, a beginner and concentrated craft class opened to men and women.

A class is typically comprised of 20 writers, more than half of whom have been in the class in previous semesters. Many remain for consecutive semesters or years, finding that long-term participation supports them as they grow, not only in skill, but in the courage it takes to break through to subject matter long suppressed. Marcella Allison, who was a member of the very first semester class in September 1991, likes to say, "I only took two semesters off: one to have a baby, one to start a business."

"Throughout the past few months, during this class, I have felt reminded - like a low buzz -that everyone carries stories, memories and poems inside them… and in this class I was able to watch and listen to these words unfold. It made me more conscious of what we say, when, and what we commit to paper. I always left the group feeling warmed and fed - my hunger for emotional honesty satisfied. And boy, what a great thing, the way we would LAUGH."

[When ] I stepped through the front door of the Ironworker Union Hall…to begin a semester writing class I didn’t understand the name of the school.  Women Writing for (a) Change…what kind of change?  Three and a half years later, I leave…a new person.  I stand taller.  I walk with a surer stride.  I extend a firmer handshake, beam a broader smile, evince a brighter glow.  - Sally Schneider
