"This group of writing women has opened a door to me. One I'd peeked in before, but never dared open on my own. Not only did they open the door, they put out a welcome mat!"

I felt my writing was meaningful because other people understood it or found a new way to look at things when I read it.

Artistic Statement

Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation and its sister organization, Women Writing for (a) Change, comprise a writing center created to evoke, hold and publish the truth-telling writing of women and girls. In all of our programs there is a high degree of consciousness and intentionality about the fact that women's words about our lives as women (whether expressed in fiction, poetry, diary, essay, drama) can be very difficult to hold, because culture itself has been created on the suppression of the feminine--and of nature--to our planetary detriment.

Dale Spender has written that "women's meanings don't get a fair hearing." In Women Writing for (a) Change semester classes and retreats for women, in Foundation programs including Young Women Writing for (a) Change, workshops and outreach programs, and through sharing our words on the Radio, both faculty and students collaborate on the creation of what is effectively "motherland," a culture by, for and about women. The center is "non-affiliated," dependent for its life on no academic or other credit-granting institution.

Women Writing for (a) Change on the Radio (WVXU, 91.7 FM) publishes the words of women, girls and men, about our writing and our lives to a four-state audience. This project is intended as outreach, to model an alternative to the distortion of people's meanings which happens as a matter of course on most talk radio and television.

In the fifteen years since its founding, Women Writing for (a) Change has grown slowly, and we hope it has grown in depth. The school began in September of 1991, with one class of fifteen women. It has grown to include six classes, a retreat program, a Feminist Leadership Academy, and Consulting for Change.

Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation has entered its seventh year of operation. Its mission is to foster a healthy writing community where the words of women and girls from all walks of life are nurtured, developed, and celebrated. The leadership and resources provided through this non-profit organization will widen the scope of programs to support the lives of women and girls who write - for change in their own lives and in the families and institutions in which they live and work.
