The Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation was established in 2000 as a sister organization to the Women Writing for (a) Change school. The School, founded in 1991, has experienced rapid growth. In 1998, participants in Women Writing for (a) Change created a committee structure, which raised and administrated funds for women and girls to attend programs at the school's Writing Hall at reduced or no cost. The committees also focused on outreach, development and marketing circles.
In September 1999, the group began the process of incorporating this committee structure as a not-for-profit organization, in order to provide adequate human and financial resources for these outgrowth activities. In September 2000, this Task Force incorporated as Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation's founding Board of Trustees. Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation was recognized as a non-profit by the State of Ohio in 2000 and by the Internal Revenue Service in 2001. Its primary roles are to reach the diverse population of girls and women in the Greater Cincinnati area and to raise and administer scholarship funds for girls and women who would not otherwise have access to the mentoring, creative support, and safe, empowering environment offered in Women Writing for (a) Change.
The Foundation also sponsors outreach programs which deliver creative writing programs and performances to women and girls in greater Cincinnati's diverse communities, through collaborations including YWCA, Peaslee Neighborhood Center, MUSE Cincinnati's Women's Choir, Urban Appalachian Council and Enjoy the Arts.
