Young Women Writing for (a) Change is a supportive and encouraging community for girls and teens to write and be heard.  Classes use the art of writing along with other modes of artistic expression to help girls enhance self-esteem, build skills in creative self-expression, learn to receive and give honest support and encouragement, develop skills in building and keeping community, and seek and recognize role models who inspire creative life choices .

Programs are designed to help strengthen girls' authentic voices, develop their ability to speak out through writing and in direct interaction, and deepen their belief in their own creative intelligence.

Special Collaboration this Fall

Women Writing for a Change and the True Body Project are partnering to offer a five-week series this fall for teen-aged girls, which will combine the best of both organizations.  The Sunday afternoon sessions, 1-4PM, from September 26 through October 24, 2010, are open to young women in grades eight through twelve. Experienced teacher-facilitators will provide a rich blend of curriculum elements from both organizations.  Sessions will take place at WWFC, 6906 Plainfield Road, Silverton.

Women Writing for a Change, founded by Mary Pierce Brosmer in 1991, and The True Body Project, founded by Stacy Sims in 2005, both seek to empower girls and women to connect to their true bodies, to develop their authentic voices, and to advocate for the health and safety of girls and women everywhere. Through the art of writing and the creation of community, individual voices are nurtured, developed, and celebrated.

"This is a collaboration whose time has come," says Stacy Sims, TBP founder.  "Women Writing for a Change has been empowering women and girls for decades, so we at True Body Project are very excited to be working together."

Nan Fischer, WWFC Program Director, adds, "A compelling part of both our programs is the emphasis on using one's experience to advocate and bring about change for others.  We see this as a wonderful opportunity, especially for our teen writers."

Summer Writing Camps

Week-long writing camps, full-day and half-day, bring together a diverse group of girls in age-appropriate classes, from ages 9 to 20. Writing camps provide time for writing in community, and time for sharing writing in a safe and supportive setting.  Camps also tap young women’s creativity through art, movement, and play.  Each camp ends the week with a public read-around for parents, grandparents and friends.

Young Women's Retreat

The Young Women’s Summer Writing Retreat is for young women entering grades 11 through college freshmen. It’s perfect for future college students to get some “me-time” before moving and for current college fresh-women to return to the kind of personal writing they may have missed during their time at college. The retreat centers around two intensive days of writing and sharing about our lives in large and small groups, culminating in a final public readaround Sunday at 5pm. Attendees are asked to bring lunch daily; Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast are provided. Young women may choose to spend Saturday night at the writing hall as a social event or they may return home and come back in the morning.

Sunday Mini-Semester Classes

Half-day writing workshops for girls and teens throughout the school year, bring together a diverse group of girls in age-appropriate classes, from ages 9 to 20.  These Sunday afternoon classes, led by experienced teachers, incorporate all the elements of the WWFC group processes.  The classes build lasting friendships, empower girls and teens to discover and use their voices, while developing their creative writing and artistic expression.

Read what one mother said about our program

My daughter enjoyed her time with the group and felt so sad that it came to an end so quickly.  She felt that they had only just began to get to know each other.  She felt such a connection and her one comment to me on the very first day  was “I feel like I belong, it’s like coming home”.

Some one asked me what the program was about “Young Women Writing for a Change”.  One thing I felt was that the title didn’t do it justice enough.  I know, for my daughter, it was the start of a journey, discovering who she really is.  It had such an impact on her emotionally and was more about her as a “Whole” person.  This is such a good program for teenage girls allowing them to connect and open up in a non threatening environment.

We can certainly recommend this program to other teenage girls.  It is an opportunity to peel away some layers and discover what lies deep within each person.
