Women Writing for (a) Change is a writing school that offers a variety of programs to men, women and young adults. In a safe and non-competitive environment, we seek to develop writing skills, strengthen voices, enhance well-being and empower individuals to create positive change.
Each class and every task group pays active attention to the quality of relationships and truth-telling within that group.
Women Writing for (a) Change was founded by Mary Pierce Brosmer in 1991. From its humble beginnings in a basement, WWFC has expanded in scope and size. We moved from the basement to the top floor of a union hall, then to a fully accessible building which we purchased in 1997.
Growth has been organic, coming from within the
lives of the founder, directors, faculty members, and the countless
women who have attended classes. We have created a sustainable model of
learning, business, and community-building. Below are some important milestones in our history.
People ages 9-95 have attended semester classes, weekend and week-long writing retreats, and Saturday theme classes in which they experience the inspiration and safety created by expert teacher-facilitators, and a vibrant, hospitable container for evoking what is theirs to tell.
In 1999, The Women Writing for (a) Change Foundation was founded to widen the accessibility of the Women Writing for (a) Change experience to include a more diverse audience through its outreach programs, its radio podcasts, and through scholarships for women and girls to attend WWf(a)C programs.
For six years, 1999-2005, Women Writing for (a) Change on the Radio published the words of its writers to a four-state audience with a radio show on NPR affiliate WVXU, 91.7 FM. WWFC continues to widen accessibility through podcast programs.
The Feminist Leadership Academy of Cincinnati (FLA) was founded in 2004 to license individuals to open Women Writing for (a) Change schools in other cities and states. The FLA also trains and certifies individuals to use WWf(a)C methods and practices in business, nonprofit, and educational settings. Since 2004, the FLA has graduated over forty women, eight of whom have established WWfaC schools in Colorado, Vermont, Oregon, Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, and Michigan.
Consulting for a Change helps businesses and nonprofits craft more conscious and sustainable organizations through the use of writing, community-building and other practices of the Women Writing for (a) Change model.
